Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area - Strategic Planning and Policy Advice

PROVIDING DIRECTION FOR ABORIGINAL CULTURAL HERITAGE

Client: Tasmanian Department of Primary Industries, Parks, Water and Environment

The Project

Extent Heritage developed a comprehensive cultural assessment plan for the Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area (TWWHA). The Outstanding Universal Value of the TWWHA is reflected in its meeting seven of the ten World Heritage criteria, covering both natural and cultural heritage, but it was recognised that relatively little is known about the Aboriginal heritage on which the cultural listing is based. The assessment plan was the product of extensive Aboriginal community consultation, solid archaeological research, high level predictive modelling, detailed logistical planning and a strong appreciation of the complex statutory and governance structures. The strategic document was prepared in line with recommendations from the World Heritage Committee and ICOMOS.

Value Unlocked

The managers of the TWWHA are now well-placed to implement a culturally sensitive assessment program that meet the needs and expectations of Aboriginal communities, the Tasmanian State Government, ICOMOS, IUCN, and the World Heritage Committee. Our approach was described by Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania as ‘setting a new bar’ for the management of cultural heritage in the TWWHA.
