PEOPLE CENTRED HERITAGE: EPISODE 3 // KIM WATSON - 161 Clarence Street, Sydney

Why were the place-based stories in this project so interesting?

We interviewed Kim Watson, Heritage Advisor, and asked her to share her experience and insights.

Extent Heritage was engaged to prepare and implement a Heritage Interpretation Plan as part of the redevelopment of 161 Clarence Street, Sydney. The artefacts that had been discovered through archaeological excavation suggest that the residents who lived there between the 1850s and 1880s were engaged in a variety of occupations and trades, including button manufacturing, dress making, leather working and wood working. But how to tell that story? Extent Heritage devised engaging displays, embedded within the redeveloped site. Our role has included ongoing care and maintenance of the artefacts, requiring routine checks and conservation to ensure that they remain well cared for and safely on display.

“On a professional level, I gained a lot of experience about how to tell place-based stories through artefacts and objects and that was an important aspect of this job … It was an exciting project to be a part of”, Kim commented.
