PEOPLE CENTRED HERITAGE: EPISODE 10 // IAN TRAVERS - QUEEN VICTORIA MARKET

“Since I’ve become CEO of Extent Heritage, I’ve had to take a more strategic outlook, obviously, but there are some projects that are very close to my heart, and this is one of them.” Ian Travers

The Queen Victoria Market is a place of national heritage significance. Part of that significance lies beneath our feet – within the boundaries of the QVM is the old Melbourne cemetery, where over 10,000 people were buried over the first three or four decades of Melbourne’s existence. It is an incredibly complicated place, embodying a range of heritage values, all within a fully operating municipal market right in the centre of one of the largest cities in Australia.

Extent Heritage has been supporting the City of Melbourne in their Queen Victoria Market Precinct Renewal Program. Our role has included working in partnership with the traditional owners for Melbourne to identify and manage Aboriginal heritage, while also preparing the Heritage Interpretation Plan for the Queen Victoria Market.
