LEARNING ABOUT BUSH TUCKER WITH KERRIE SAUNDERS

“Sharing knowledge is so important… Food brings people together all around the world. All cultures do it. And I want to share with people that my culture is still alive.” – Kerrie Saunders.

Last month, Extent Heritage was proud to host Gomeroi woman Kerrie Saunders to the @icomos_ga2023 in Sydney.

Kerrie is from Moree, on Gamilaraay/Gomeroi Country, where she runs the popular Yinarr-Ma Bush Tucker Tours. In her presentation to a diverse range of heritage professionals from around the world, Kerrie took us through the traditional food practices of her Country, turning native millet grains from the Moree grasslands into flour, and baking bread on-site.

It was an eye-opening demonstration for those present from Australia and abroad. As Kerrie says, food brings people together all over the world, and it’s a key part of keeping communities together and cultures alive.

Extent Heritage has worked with Kerrie in the past, on a series of oral history films about the stories of Gamilaraay/Gomeroi Country. Meeting Knowledge Holders and learning these skills, passed down generations, is always an honour, and we’d like to thank Kerrie for sharing her stories with us.
