An archaeologist by training, Ian has gone on to accrue a very broad expertise and experience in heritage management in the UK, Southern Europe, the USA, and Australia.

He’s worked closely with business analysts, tourism specialists, ecologists, landscape architects, engineers, agriculturalists and other heritage professionals in the completion of complex projects. Ian has developed and led several large, groundbreaking cultural heritage studies involving diverse clients, multidisciplinary teams and numerous community stakeholders. He has particular expertise in the assessment of cultural values and significance-based management.

Ian was the President of Australia ICOMOS from 2016 to 2019, and is active nationally and internationally in academic institutions and NGOs, including as the founding President of the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on Water and Heritage.
