HISTORICAL archaeology TEAM LEADER - VICTORIA

Extent Heritage has an exciting, once in a decade opportunity for an experienced and motivated specialist in historical archaeology.

About the role

Extent Heritage has a permanent full-time opportunity for a Team Leader to join our rapidly growing Melbourne team based in Brunswick East. The role is a senior management position with responsibility for management of the Victorian team’s historical archaeological services.

Your brief will encompass:

  • services, client and business development,

  • leadership in development of methodology and innovative research approaches to our work,

  • advocacy within the profession,

  • management of the in-house historical archaeology team and larger project-specific teams,

  • oversight of tender preparation,

  • management of projects and delivery of high-quality reports, and

  • expert advice to our clients and stakeholders.

About you

You have:

  • a degree in archaeology with Honours or equivalent

  • extensive experience in heritage surveys, excavation, site recording, significance assessment, report preparation and heritage related research

  • experience managing teams of archaeologists

  • strong profile within the profession

  • extensive experience in community consultation and engagement around cultural heritage

  • a minimum of 8 years’ experience in an equivalent heritage management professional practice

  • the ability to prepare complex assessment and management reports to a high professional standard with consideration for the audience

  • experience working in a commercial environment

  • robust knowledge of historical cultural heritage management in Australia, particularly in the Victorian context

  • a track record of being issued with permits and consents for site excavation by Heritage Victoria

  • demonstrated ability to work autonomously when required, but also as part of a broader team can readily adopt advice and direction when required

  • solid experience in project management, including managing project finances and managing field teams with demonstrated ability to meet deadlines and budget constraints

  • excellent oral and written communication skills

  • a valid manual drivers’ license.

You are:

  • motivated to work with the broader Extent Heritage team to pursue holistic and innovative heritage management outcomes

  • a proactive team player, willing to ask questions and make suggestions to ensure work is always delivered to a high quality

  • highly flexible, adaptable and willing to work in a dynamic and constantly changing environment.

Desirable skills and experience:

  • In-depth and practical working knowledge of applicable Victorian and Commonwealth legislation

  • Senior First Aid Certificate

  • Valid 4WD qualification

  • Experience doing remote field work

  • Membership of a relevant professional body such AACAI, ICOMOS, AAA

  • A track record of publication and/or conference papers related to your consulting or academic research work

  • A specialist skill area (GIS, artefact analysis, surveying etc)

  • You are experienced working with Aboriginal organisations

  • You are included on the Aboriginal Victoria Heritage Advisors list.
